African-American Writers: A Reading List

July 1, 2007

Martha Southgate, the author of The Fall of Rome (a great book, especially worth reading for educators), has this guide to African-American writers in today’s NYTimes. I’m excited about the list because it includes perhaps my favorite book, The Chaneysville Incident, by David Bradley. Southgate describes it as “a nearly-forgotten gem of a novel about an embittered young history professor who comes home to care for his former caregiver and learns a host of family secrets about slavery and its relationship to his own life.”
